That may be a terrible headline and an insensitive thing to say given the out of control criminality we live with in South Africa and the many people traumatised on a daily basis. However, it was a comment made to me by a security supplier recently when I asked how his business was doing.
The recession may cause cutbacks and reductions in various areas of business and personal life, but the only effect it has on crime is to make it a more attractive option for certain personality types and those who are desperate and can see no other option. This means security service providers that are able to offer quality and reliable solutions will make it through the recession with minimal damage – assuming their international suppliers make it as well.
Of course there will be less money to go around, which means those companies already operating on a shoestring and delivering solutions that are sub-par will feel the pinch. Fortunately, security users have a plethora of options when it comes to securing person and premises. And as you will see throughout the magazine and the CCTV Handbook, integrating technology and human resources can save money while delivering improved security.
