Nice launches DC Blue Astute garage door motor

Towards the end of 2024, Nice Systems SA launched a new garage door motor specifically designed and manufactured for the South African market. The Nice DC Blue Astute features a pre-installed lithium-ion battery, replacing the standard lead-acid batteries typically used in garage doors. It also includes a high-speed charger and is more competitively priced than many other high-quality products on the market.

Despite this being a lower-cost product, Nice designed the DC Blue Astute with the same focus on quality and longevity as all local and international Nice products. The control board was also adapted to be lithium-ready, and consideration was given to the care of the battery to achieve a longer lifespan. The battery management system includes features such as low-voltage, over-voltage, and short-circuit cut-offs, while ensuring a safe operating temperature.

A ‘supercharger’, which can charge the battery to 100% in about 90 minutes instead of the traditional 8-hour time frame, is included – again without damaging the battery’s lifespan. The battery offers 48 hours of standby power or 70 open-close cycles. If the battery is 100% depleted, the door can be operated within 10 minutes of reconnecting to power.

To avoid confusion regarding motor strength for different applications, Nice decided to release a single, highly powerful model rated at 1000 N.

Nice SA’s Gerald Kirsten says the motor also sports a new aesthetically pleasing design to meet the standards of any customer, while being lighter and easier to install. Due to the lower weight, the motor can be installed without additional equipment to lift or balance it while a technician is up on a ladder, for example, which simplifies the installation process. It also fits in with old drawbars, again making the installation process quicker.

As a local product, Nice supports its products from seven branches across South Africa and can repair the devices down to the component level since it is the manufacturer. Kirsten adds that Nice understands that installers do not want to be forced to keep returning to their clients’ premises to deal with garage door motor issues, hence the focus on quality and longevity throughout the design process.
