An innovative competition, designed to find the security industry's finest CCTV system installers, was launched by Norbain SA (previously Reditron) at Securex 2006.
Several teams competed in the prestigious contest, which promised a major cash prize to the winning team, a handsome floating trophy for the winning company and the kudos of being recognised as the South African industry's first 'Installer of the Year'.
The winning crew consisted of Phillip Jacobs and Charles Taylor from AV Electronics, who earned the highest overall score.
Renato Bordin, technical manager of Norbain SA, said all the entrants were highly enthusiastic about the competition. "Many have already asked where they can sign up for next year. We will definitely be sponsoring the competition again in 2007."
The contestants were given a specification with a schematic of a system, as well as a brief of the required system functionality. They had to connect four CCTV cameras to a digital video recorder and the associated cables, focus the pictures and ensure the system was configured according to the requirements.
Judging was done according to predetermined criteria, which included whether the system was set up according to specification, whether the cameras were set up and focused correctly, how the individuals worked as a team, how efficiently they tidied up after the installation, and the time taken to complete the installation.
"There was more to the competition than simply being the quickest - contestants had to cover all the bases, and the installation had to be done properly," Bordin said. "Phillip and Charles planned their strategy, worked well together, knew exactly what had to be done, and did everything correctly in the best time. They were the clear winners."
