Third party inspections
A sub-committee was appointed at the first FDIA committee meeting to push ahead the controversial but necessary third party inspection bureau.
The sub-committee will work with John Goring of ASIB to establish an independent organisation that will provide a third party certification of all installations conducted by FDIA members.
Why?
The FDIA consists mainly of contractors who can not inspect each other's work.
No other organisation, private, government or quasi government, has stepped forward to ensure high level of expertise in the fire detection arena.
Fire detection systems are a life safety provision so they have to be installed and operated correctly.
This means to provide a second or third level of inspection to assist, and protect the contractor, the consultant, the architect and the end user.
An ongoing inspection facility will be provided.
When?
There are a lot of structures to put in place, a lot of market research required, a lot of resentment to be broken and a lot of groundwork to be covered before this bureau can be put in place. We estimate the third quarter of this year with operations starting in and around Johannesburg initially, before spreading countrywide.
