Security seal distributor and manufacturer, Aluvin Securiseal has cautioned that not enough is being done in the cargo transportation industry to ensure the safety and security of containers entering and exiting South Africa's sea and airports.
"A US federal court security commission found in 2000 that only 2% of the cargo coming into the various ports of the US is physically inspected and the figure for South Africa is probably not very different," says Kevin Norwitz, managing director, Aluvin.
"Since the September 11 attacks, protection of cargo has become a major international priority. I believe that we should be revisiting legislation in this regard but, in the meantime, individual players in the supply chain must make sure of the effectiveness of cargo security," he said.
"We can no longer afford to take any chances. South Africa has to become a leader in the cargo industry worldwide and the most important requirement at the moment is security," concluded Norwitz.
