Biometrics control airport railroad

September 2019 Access Control & Identity Management

Incheon International Airport successfully opened Terminal 2, which serves 19 million people (on average) per year. The airport railway runs between Seoul Station and Incheon International Airport Station Terminal 2, a total length of 63 km, with an average distance between stations of 5.3 km. In spite of the distance, the Incheon Airport Railroad Express Train can transport passengers from the airport terminal to Seoul (Korea’s capital city), in 43 minutes. Contributing to an efcient, effective and fast transportation experience. The airport railway has recognised the increasing number of passengers departing from Incheon Airport.

The railway previously used Suprema’s X-Station (LCD touch screen RFID reader), along with the BioStar version 1 platform (PC-based software). As time passed, Incheon Airport wanted to update its security solution. It was currently using only an X-Station with all security information stored inside the device, which left user’s data information on the edge. In addition, Incheon Airport Railroad needed to use its own security platform and required an effective means of integrating Suprema hardware into it.

Centralised, more secure solution

Suprema’s partner in Korea, Jung One Security, upgraded the existing system to Suprema’s centralised access control schema using CoreStation (Suprema’s intelligent biometric control panel). Now, 32 X-Station units are connected to a total of eight CoreStation units via Wiegand, installed at the head ofce control centre. The X-Stations are customised with a more comfortable and user-friendly UI for the Incheon Airport Railroad. They supply users with fast and easy access to all the required features and functions.

CoreStation now controls all user information and data logs, eliminating the concern of user and data information compromise, given that the X-Station terminals now act purely as readers. The resultant system topology of CoreStation combined with 10 BioStation A2 units (ngerprint terminals), installed in server and operating rooms, along with 100 XPass units (intelligent RFID readers), installed in 14 stations of the airport railroad, and a new security platform that Incheon Airport Railroad developed using BioStar 2 API software, offers a far more convenient control solution, which in conclusion, led to enhanced customer satisfaction.

Key benefits

Enhanced security system. A centralised access control system with CoreStation is able to improve the security level as no user information and logs are saved on the edge reader installed at the door.

Fast processing time. The high quality and faster performance of CoreStation, BioStation A2, and XPass increases operational efciency and user satisfaction.

Easy operation. Integrating BioStar 2 into Incheon Airport Railroad HRM system using BioStar 2 API software provides a more efcient management system for administrators.
