Jan Paxton, MD of ADT Kusela, a commercial security provider in South Africa, believes there is great potential to grow the commercial business locally by offering a complete tailored risk and security solution offering, comprising both technology and manpower.
Paxton says the days of simply providing a security quote are a thing of the past. “Commercial security solutions have become increasingly sophisticated and involve a full risk assessment of a client’s needs. This is to establish direct losses and consequential potential losses like damage to reputation, loss in productivity etc, so a customised package and product can be developed to address that clients specific needs.
“We believe in developing expertise in specific vertical markets and then looking for synergies amongst these verticals. We often find that there are common risk factors across a various vertical sector.
“A standard risk analysis of a food factory for example will not only look at the potential threat from outside where a direct financial loss will be incurred, but also at the possibility that the food could be contaminated, which could lead to serious damage to reputation resulting in losses that potentially reach billions of rand. It also looks at internal risk such as sabotage and provides solutions on how to address that risk.
“Our approach is generally to harden from the inside out by offering a fully integrated solution starting with access control into specific areas utilising sophisticated biometric verification backed by CCTV. This is supported by security guards or loss prevention officers as they are now referred to, backed by a pro-active control room to manage the situation.
“Security has gone much further than just protecting against theft, it is about assessing and understanding risk and then coming up with the most appropriate solution which will ultimately reduce the total cost of the security solution,” concludes Paxton.
