Seton upgrades security with fibre

September 2008 Surveillance

Seton, a US-owned company based in Nigel is involved in the manufacturing of leather products for the automotive industry. The company recently upgraded its CCTV system and in the process switched to a fibre cabling backbone to improve the quality and performance of its camera network.

Seton was facing an ageing CCTV system which needed a major overhaul and upgrade. Due to the long lifespan of the system, the company was faced with old systems and deteriorating cabling. Like all South African companies, it also had to deal with regular power surges and high EMF signals that were affecting picture quality. The system was therefore unreliable and no longer met the company's security requirements.

Seton decided to revamp its entire CCTV system, including the network. A completely new CCTV system with fibre-optic cabling would offer the latest in surveillance technology with no cabling or bandwidth issues to deal with. Moreover, fibre cable lasts longer than traditional copper and picture quality is not compromised or disrupted as easily.

U&S Radio Alarms was the integrator selected to provide the upgrade solution with Johan Steenkamp the onsite project manager. The goal was to implement a state-of-the-art system which would meet Seton's immediate and future CCTV requirements.

The new system consists of 35 cameras in total, including high-speed dome units. The fibre-optic cable eliminated the previous EMF interference while improving image quality substantially. Once installed, the fibre-optic transmitters and receivers were responsible for transmitting all video and data signals, from cameras to the control room. IFS is manufactured in the USA and is distributed in South Africa by Alves Audio Visual.

Any change to fibre-optic cabling as a means of communicating video and data signals must always be carefully planned. In this case, U&S Radio Alarms also provisioned the system for future scalability as fibre networks are becoming more common due to their versatility and reliability.

Once the planning phase was completed, the installation proceeded smoothly. U&S Radio Alarms completed the Seton project on time and within budget, its largest fibre-optic system installation to date.
