The first SABS standard applicable to CCTV systems has been released. The new standard, SABS 0222-5-2:1999, Electrical security installations: CCTV installations - Applications guidelines, published by the South African Bureau of Standards, is the first of its kind and according to the CCTV Working Group Committee Chairman, Brian Barnes - ABSA Group, the first of a number of standards that the group has been working on. According to the Standard's introduction, "The purpose of this part (5-2:1999) of the SABS 0222 standard is to provide guidance to ensure that closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems are used to their full potential in security applications."
Says Barnes, "This series of standards will prove useful to those responsible for establishing operational requirements, writing specifications and selecting, installing, commissioning, using and maintaining CCTV systems."
The CCTV Working Group committee is to be congratulated for getting the process off the ground, and for its persistence and vision in getting South Africa's first CCTV standard on the table, amidst a generally apathetic contribution from the industry at large.
