Surveillance footage from systems supplied by South African developer and manufacturer Cathexis, has been used to give police the break they needed to solve a murder case in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Due to the excellent image quality of the recordings, the police have been able to positively identify four people suspected of murdering a 23-year-old man.
Cathexis is a 'true' South African manufacturer, with all the video cards being designed and manufactured locally. The company's head office is in La Lucia in Durban, with the systems being manufactured in Gauteng. Cathexis exports about 70% of its equipment into the USA, Canada, Middle East, India, Europe, Australia and the East.
This is not the first time that the Cathexis systems have been used to solve crimes internationally. Last year the systems were used to assist police in several investigations in the greater London area. In these cases, the powerful Cathexis CAT-Vision Central Control Room Suite was being used in a remote monitoring environment.
The reliability of the systems, and the excellent 'health monitoring' within them enables Cathexis to supply and support systems worldwide with minimal infrastructure. The fact that systems use a NetBsd (Linux-based) operating system also ensures product stability and minimised the risk of virus attack.
