DSC (Digital Security Controls) is a global company founded in 1979 that designs and manufactures security products with a strong emphasis on wireless technology. Specialising in alarms, intrusion detection, and perimeter protection systems, DSC integrates advanced wireless solutions to offer flexible and scalable security measures.

This focus on wireless technology enhances installation ease and reduces the need for extensive wiring, making its systems ideal for a wide range of applications, including residential, commercial, and industrial properties. DSC is distributed in the region by Elvey Security Technologies, which answered SMART Security Solutions’ questions.

Two product ranges, DSC NEO and DSC IQ (Qolsys), are prominent players in the alarm, intrusion, and perimeter security space, but have distinct focuses and approaches. DSC’s focus includes:

• Traditional security systems: DSC is known for its robust and reliable traditional security systems. It has a long history of providing hardwired and hybrid (wired and wireless) intrusion systems that are well-regarded in both residential and commercial settings.

• Advanced wireless technology: DSC has developed advanced wireless technologies, including PowerG, which offers high performance with extended range and secure communication. PowerG is known for its reliability and resistance to interference.

• Commercial and residential solutions: DSC provides solutions for large-scale commercial applications and residential properties, emphasising durability and scalability.

• Legacy integration: DSC offers systems that integrate with, and upgrade from, older DSC installations, ensuring continuity for existing customers while providing modern enhancements.

DSC IQ focuses on:

• Modern user experience: DSC IQ emphasises a contemporary, user-friendly experience with its IQ Panel series. Their systems are designed with sleek touch-screen interfaces and advanced features that appeal to today’s tech-savvy consumers.

• Smart home integration: DSC IQ integrates seamlessly with smart home technologies. Its panels often include built-in support for various smart home protocols like Z-Wave, which allows for comprehensive automation and control of lights, thermostats, locks, and more.

• Wireless solutions: DSC IQ focuses on wireless technology, emphasising easy-to-install and expandable systems. DSC IQ Panel systems are known for integrating with a wide range of wireless sensors and smart home devices.

• Advanced communication: DSC IQ systems often feature multiple communication options, including cellular and Wi-Fi, to ensure reliable remote monitoring and control. The systems also support over-the-air updates, which keeps the technology current with minimal maintenance.

Elvey highlighted some of the advantages of the DSC PowerSeries Neo, which offers the flexibility of a modular, hardwired system with the simplicity of a wide range of wireless devices and peripherals. This provides a versatile hybrid system for small business structures through large-scale commercial applications.

Four control panels ranging in capacity from 16 to 128 zones allow the PowerSeries Neo to cater to various security system installations with even the most demanding partitioning requirements. These panels fully integrate with the selection of PowerG-enabled devices, which have been created with simplicity of installation and user-friendliness in mind. A wide range of devices use the most innovative technologies to capitalise on the convenience, versatility and capabilities of the 2-way wireless PowerG technology.

PowerSeries Neo devices require minimal installation time due to fewer wiring requirements, allowing for the installation of devices in challenging areas. The broad selection of devices includes PowerG-enabled motion detectors, contacts, wireless keys and various life-safety devices such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

PowerSeries Neo supports both wired and wireless components, allowing users to leverage existing wired infrastructure while adding the flexibility of wireless devices. This hybrid approach simplifies installation and expansion. The system supports cellular communication (3G/4G or LTE) for reliable remote monitoring and alarm reporting. Some models offer optional Wi-Fi modules for internet connectivity, allowing remote access and integration with monitoring services.

In a nutshell, the series consists of:

• PowerSeries Neo Control Panels.

• PowerSeries Neo Keypads.

• PowerG-Enabled Devices (see below).

• Communicators.

• Software Support Solutions.

PowerG wireless technology

One of the DSC innovations is PowerG, which offers all the benefits of traditional wired security without the hassles and vulnerabilities of wires. It makes end users’ lives more secure and convenient, and installation work more profitable.

PowerG delivers reliable, two-way 128-bit AES encrypted communication and protection that blocks interference to deliver unparalleled cyber protection – ensuring reliable performance with minimum false alarms. Long-range wireless transmission enables easy and quick wire-free and repeater-free installations, and adaptive transmission stretches the time between battery changes. It offers:

• Extended range: PowerG technology offers a superior wireless range compared to traditional systems. It enables reliable communication over long distances, which is ideal for larger properties or installations with challenging layouts.

• Encryption: PowerG uses advanced encryption algorithms to secure wireless communication between the control

panel and sensors. This provides robust protection against unauthorised access and hacking attempts.

• Interference resistance: The technology is designed to minimise interference from other wireless devices and environmental factors, ensuring consistent performance and reliability.

Integration and operation

Regarding integration with additional security products, both DSC NEO and DSC IQ offer their own wireless visual verification detectors, enhancing security by providing real-time visual confirmation of alarms. The systems integrate with other security and home automation solutions, including Kantech and Exacq. This allows for a customised and comprehensive approach to security, incorporating a wide range of products and technologies to suit various needs.

A wired connection to a low-voltage AC transformer primarily powers DSC PowerSeries Neo systems. This ensures continuous operation and reliability for the main control panel. The systems also include a rechargeable backup battery that provides power during outages, ensuring the security system remains operational even when the main power is disrupted.

DSC IQ Panel systems are powered by a wired connection to a low-voltage AC adapter, which includes a rechargeable backup battery to maintain functionality during power outages. IQ panels also support Z-Wave for smart home automation devices. Some DSC IQ products offer Bluetooth capabilities for local device pairing and setup. Additionally, IQ panels have built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing for internet access, remote control, and integration with cloud services. They can also have cellular modules for 3G or 4G LTE connectivity.

Local support

As always, a product’s success and reliability depend on the local availability of stock and support if something goes wrong. Elvey staff have been trained and have the technical expertise in DSC products to ensure that at least one person in each branch can provide technical assistance. A specialised technical team is located at the company’s head office to address more complex technical issues that require attention to detail.

Elvey also offers warranties across all the manufacturing brands it supplies, varying from 12 months to 10 years, depending on the brand. In addition to product training, Elvey provides training for a wide range of needs, from basic concepts to specialised solutions.
