As part of a general upgrading of Goodwood Prison in Cape Town, CCTV surveillance technology specialist, Thales Advanced Engineering, won a contract worth R750 000 to manufacture a digital online surveillance system using a total of 112 cameras.
"The online digital surveillance system offers high reliability with flexibility - both being desirable features for institutions that operate to rigid schedules and routines in an environment that does not lend itself to easy provision of support services," says Thales managing director, Dr Bennie Coetzer.
The project was completed in June 2004. Consulting engineers were CA du Toit and Thlokomelo Management, both of Cape Town. The system was installed by Nolitha, a Cape Town-based electronic systems installer and integrator, and was also integrated into the prison's existing security matrix.
