The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) once again chose a security seal from Aluvin to secure all the ballot boxes used in a general election. Aluvin was given the contract after assessment by the IEC of several companies. The April 2004 election was the third election in which Aluvin has played such an important role.
The seal, Securetite, is manufactured in Aluvin's Germiston factory under licence to EJ Brooks Company, a worldwide security sealing company. "This is a very tough pull-up security seal used in a wide variety of applications," says Kevin Norwitz, Aluvin MD.
"Each seal - and there were more than 200 000 in this instance - has to be printed with a unique, individual number so that any tampering can be easily identified. The entire system could be compromised if both the product and the system within which it is used were not absolutely reliable."
Simon Boyle, IEC's national logistics manager and responsible for the provisioning of materials to 17 000 voting stations, says that security is obviously a critical factor in the success of any election. "We have to ensure that we work with reliable suppliers who have reliable products and Aluvin has delivered the goods for three elections now," he says.
