Gray Security Services acquires US company

June '99 News & Events

Recently listed asset protection group, Gray Security Services has moved into the US security industry through the acquisition of a Miami-based security firm.

Purchased for an undisclosed sum, Crime Prevention - a niche security company - has been active in the US industry for more than ten years. The company has developed a client base that includes several international film stars whose names are protected by a confidentiality clause.

The company name changes to Gray Security Services and will form a base from which Gray will penetrate selected South American markets in order to take advantage of the region's similarities to southern Africa.

Gray executive director Fanie de Witt, who will head up Gray's new business development in the Americas, said the acquisition was in line with the company's proven growth model of spreading geographically by first establishing a strong base in a particular region, then using it as a springboard for further expansion.

"Miami is recognised as a gateway into both North and South America making it the ideal base from which to expand. We have already identified certain niche industries in South America, including mining and certain sectors of the motor industry," said De Witt who will be based in the US.

"In Crime Prevention we identified an operating philosophy similar to our own, a low staff turnover and management dedicated to client service," he added.

De Witt joined Gray Security Services in November 1991 and established the company's Eastern Cape operation. He was MD of Gray's Cape and Free State operations, before becoming an executive director and taking responsibility for the three coastal companies in the group.
