Alarm system protection during lightning season

December 2003 Perimeter Security, Alarms & Intruder Detection, Asset Management

Surge Technology's HDO 280/T overvoltage surge arresters are designed to protect industrial and domestic alarm systems from damage due to lightning or overvoltage conditions. All types of alarms may be protected by the HDO 280/T, including burglar and fire alarms, as well as CCTV systems.

It is important that power to an alarm system is protected, even if an UPS system is in use. The weatherproof devices are ideal for installation in confined areas and fit easily inside most controllers and should be installed on the power feed to the control panel. These units are designed to withstand peak surge currents of 40 kA and to simultaneously protect both live and neutral.

All wires connected to zones, keypads and sirens, for example, need to be protected as these act as antenna for the surge currents under lightning conditions. To protect these wires, Surge Technology recommends their Copa 8-wire protection modules. These units are designed to repeatedly withstand peak surge currents of 10 kA and limit the voltage to acceptable levels. Each unit has eight channels with screw terminals for ease of installation in new and existing systems.

The need for protection is greatly increased when alarm systems are linked between various buildings, as is often the case at large industrial sites. In these applications it is also necessary to install protection at the satellite controllers or repeaters, as well as on the communications cables linking the various systems.
