Turnstiles are an effective method of controlling the access of persons entering and leaving a building or premises. As a physical barrier, turnstiles effectively restrict access to unauthorised persons and at the same time allow easy access to employees. Most turnstiles, whether they be full height or waist height are manufactured from stainless steel or mild steel or a complement of both for increased strength and durability.
Glass is now also used to add the dimension of aesthetic appeal whilst remaining strong and secure. Other materials being used include aluminium as well as brass. For example, Flow Systems Manufacturers have introduced a range of aesthetically appealing turnstiles and revolving doors for front-line applications. These turnstiles are usually made with security glass within stainless steel structured frames. Such turnstiles are being successfully used at a number of prestigious buildings around the country where the aesthetic appearance of the entrance is important but where security also needs to play an important role.
It is important to remember that the turnstile be of an appealing design but at the same time not lose its effectiveness as an access control barrier. In this way turnstiles can be seen as complementary to a building rather than as obstructive. These turnstiles can take the form of full height turnstiles for higher levels of security and waist height glass turnstiles for low key security and are also made with many differing designs and features.
