Learners and tutors involved in ADT Teach, a computer literacy programme developed and sponsored by ADT Security, recently celebrated the milestones and successes achieved since the programme was launched in March.
An award ceremony was held on 3 December at Siyakhula Education Foundation, in Ebony Park, to honour the learners who had participated and excelled in the programme during the year. managing director of ADT: Central, Roy Rawlins, and ADT Teach Senior IT Tutor Francisca Chikondo presented the learners with their awards.
44 learners received awards for Best Attendance. These learners did not miss a single lesson throughout the year. 24 learners received Best Class Participation awards, three learners received Best Improved Student and 12 learners were awarded with a Recommendable Class Representative award. ADT rewarded these learners with books, math instrument sets and flash disks.
For Rawlins, the cherry on top was handing out the Top Achievers awards.
"These nine students embraced the programme and achieved amazing results throughout the year. We were proud to give each of them a desktop PC sponsored by ADT so they can continue their learning and excel in the years ahead," he says.
When ADT launched the programme earlier in the year, the primary objectives were to provide opportunities for education and IT skills development in under-resourced township high schools; to obtain measurable results; and to introduce the learners to education, training and employment opportunities at ADT once they matriculate. Chikondo says these objectives were achieved in the first year, despite the multitude of challenges within the township schooling environment, the negative impact of the prolonged public servants strike and the extended World Cup holiday period.
"It has been a challenging year for schools in South Africa and without the commitment of the learners, tutors and project champions and principals in the three participating schools, the programme would not have been the success it has been. The support from ADT in terms of driving the programme and providing all the necessary equipment has been vital and greatly appreciated.
"Highlights have been the World Cup Final party that we held for the learners at the Siyakhula premises, ADT Teach's debut on SABC and 15 learners participating in the Bring a Girl Child to Work Day at ADT. I am looking forward to 2011 and what the new year will bring for these learners. They are learning and growing at an exciting rate and, without a doubt, will continue to do so in the coming year," concludes Chikondo.
The ADT Teach programme is run at Allanridge Combined School in Rabie Ridge, Tsosoloso YaAfrica Secondary School in Ebony Park and Umqhele Secondary School in Ivory Park.
