Biometrics round-up 2009

October 2009 Access Control & Identity Management

With three billion people registered on some form of electronic biometric system the world over, it is a safe bet that each of us will soon count among that growing number. In fact, as a leader in the rollout and use of biometrics, South Africans, or between 20 million and 30 million of them are already on Big Brother’s database and consequently, if you are one of them, your data might be floating around the airwaves. It seems the only people in South Africa who do not have their personal data flung willy-nilly about are those in criminal cartels. But enough about local sports governing bodies.

Those privileged to read this year’s Access Control Handbook, which focused on integrated identity management, would have noticed that the use of biometrics in access control and time-and-attendance applications not only speeds the flow of people, but also saves money. Biometrics prevents buddy clocking, and ghost workers, and it makes it expensive for those determined to cheat the system, since to date we do not have mass produced fingerprints on sale – or if we do, nobody told us. And biometrics go further, touching on all aspects of business and security, not to mention health and safety issues as can be seen from the BiometriX 2009 report-back.

And while there is no doubt that the biometric gorilla in the market today is Sagem Sécurité, represented locally by Ideco Biometric Security Solutions, local movements in this arena are looking positive. A growing local biometric player, iPulse Systems, has gained a foothold in the market and is looking at growing its market share here and up into Africa. A brief profile of iPulse can be seen at The pulse of local biometrics.

The meat and potatoes of the biometrics round-up is below and includes an overview of some of the latest biometric solutions on the market, local and international in origin. Whatever your biometric needs may be, local users are not lacking choice. Should you wish to comment on the items, feel free to write to [email protected].
