Westec Electronics, led by Martyn Williams, entered into the security business in 1986. The company grew from a sole proprietorship to a proprietary company employing 25 staff. As their skills and integrity grew so did their involvement in many prestigious projects. KPMG, SASOL Synthetic Fuels and Exchange Square are true examples of a culmination of capabilities, expertise and knowledge in the security industry.
In January of 2000 their integral position in the security and systems integration's field was aptly substantiated through their involvement in Exchange Square.
The end of 2000 marked the completion of Westec Electronics' largest project to date: Exchange Square at a value estimated at R6,1 million.
This tightly scheduled contract involved three buildings: JSE Securities Exchange, Deutsche Bank and ABN Amro Bank. At this time, site supervisor Derrick Elder, three technicians and five assistants maintained a permanent presence. Project manager Martyn Williams and operations director Paul Williams provided the additional support required at the latter part of the project. One of the key foci of this project, explained by Paul Williams, was an emphasis on fire safety and security, thereby maximising on interface control.
Services included the design and installation of the equipment and subsystems. The core monitoring and graphics display is provided by the videoweb software - this in turn receives on-line information from the access control, fire alarm and building monitoring systems. The videoweb user interface also automatically controls the operation of the closed circuit TV system, to provide on-screen video surveillance of all occurrences and reactions. All CCTV camera views are digitally recorded at a rate of 3,7 frames per second.
Equipment used included smoke detection/evacuation, gas extinguishing, building alarm monitoring and access control: turnstiles, swing arms and traffic barriers. "A world first in using steel readers rendered the access control more reliable, flexible and less vulnerable to tampering," said Martyn Williams.
Additional services and extensions to Exchange Square are still being commissioned.
Westec Electronics is responsible for the design and implementation of a number of large CCTV systems for application: the largest residing in SASOL Synthetic Fuels in Secunda, a continuous client of eight years. The CCTV system in place has been designed specifically for safety and plant monitoring. The use of the twisted pair system over the existing telephone network has vastly improved their control capabilities.
The monitoring of this petrochemical plant was achieved by utilising their existing emergency telephone network for the successful transmission and control of 45 CCTV cameras. State-of-the art twisted pair technology was used for balanced transmission of video and telemetry. The system is comprised of six independent control rooms with an overall master facility in the disaster control room.
A totally integrated form of monitoring designed for KPMG head office enabled control room staff to view and digitally record occurrences automatically. Building conditions and monitored areas were linked with the videoweb CCTV surveillance system to provide instant views of the problem sectors. Graphics driven CCTV allowed operators to effectively survey areas without having prior knowledge of the cameras positioning, speeding up the response time. The system has proved its worth in providing evidence for convictions in the past.
Other prestigious clients include: NATREF, British Airways, Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, Alexander Forbes and NOCSA. Maintenance contracts are held by the majority of the above.
