February 2001 Surveillance

The South African Postal Services (SAPOS) at Johannesburg International Airport is streamlining its efficiency by minimising theft and shrinkage with the aid of Panasonic security systems which are being installed into the new Mail Centre and Speed Services buildings.

Panasonic has supplied both the Mail Centre and the Speed Services buildings with their advanced CCTV camera systems. The installation of the new security system was undertaken by Sizakahle in a joint venture with Siemens. Jannie de Villiers, Project Manager at Sizakahle, explains that the total value of the contract was in excess of R4m.

De Villiers adds that the mailing operations within both buildings are now secure as the camera system is supplemented with an access control system, allowing only authorised personnel access to various areas, as well as a PA system.

According to Mags Anthony, Divisional Director of Panasonic Broadcast and TV Systems, "Panasonic is extremely pleased that SAPOS has put their trust in Panasonic Security Systems. Panasonic now offers a complete range of products enabling us to deliver a complete turnkey solution. The greatest advantage of utilising a single manufacturer is that clients are assured of optimum reliability, functionality and good quality pictures."

Jack Parel, SAPOS Manager, Security and Investigation Services, Corporate Business Units, is upbeat about the Panasonic equipment. "The quality of the pictures is excellent. If required, we can read an address on an envelope that is 120 m away. We certainly believe that the new security system will go a long way in helping us curb the problems we were experiencing at the Mail Centre and Speed Services buildings."

The security systems of both buildings are controlled via control rooms situated within the respective buildings. The Mail Centre has two consoles containing 14 colour monitors, multiplexers, a matrix system 500 and system controllers providing full control of 153 cameras. Speed Services has one console, seven colour monitors, a matrix system 500 and system controllers that control 57 cameras. Of the cameras supplied 44 of these are the high-speed super dynamic dome cameras.
