A Wilco Transport truck containing R120000 worth of cooking oil was hijacked in the early morning hours of Friday 4 February 2000. The driver of the truck informed Cois de Wet, the owner of the transporting company, who in turn notified the police as well as one of Digicore’s sales representatives, ‘JW’ Oberholzer.
The C-Track tracking device installed in the truck registered the movement of the stolen truck on a fleet management desk at De Wet’s premises. Keeping contact through a mobile telephone De Wet assisted Oberholzer in tracking down the speeding vehicle in a record time of 45 min.
The truck, robbed from its contents, was found next to the road in Jetpark Johannesburg.
Retracing the route
Making use of the C-Track device, Oberholzer assisted by the police retrace the route the stolen vehicle followed earlier on. Through the C-Track tracking device the police uncovered a stolen goods depot not only containing the R120 000 worth of stolen cooking oil but also 152 Logic television sets to the value of R230 000. The police also found a logbook containing the amount, prices and delivering dates of the goods.
C-Track the system
The C-Track consists of a microprocessor that is installed in a vehicle. It utilises the accurate GPS system to determine the vehicle position. C-TRACK allows for all vehicle status changes or violations of pre-set parameters to be recorded on board the vehicle and also be transmitted to the base station computer at the operator’s office or control centre. This information transmission is done utilising the short message system (SMS) of the ever-increasing GSM networks in the relative countries around the world.
Flexible, advanced software control
This information is received and decoded by the unique and advanced C-Track software. The fleet operator is then able to see on the different levels of maps, where and in what status his vehicles are. Preferred and no-go areas can be set by the operator for each of his vehicles. The maximum allowed speed, maximum engine revs, braking force and maximum idle time can be set for the vehicles.
The parameter settings are all done from the base station, thereby preventing any driver interference. The frequency at which the information is transmitted to the base station is also determined and programmed by the operator, making C-Track a very cost-effective fleet management system. This automatic vehicle update will, however, be interrupted in case of a parameter violation that the operator has selected, to report as it occurs.
“We truly believe that with the help of Digicore’s C-Track device we uncovered the core of a ruthless syndicate”, explains Sergeant Maloi of the Truck Hijacking Unit Kempton Park. “The quick and diligent reaction of Oberholzer truly saved the day.”
“To know where the vehicles are and what they are doing is critically important to operate the fleet effectively and cost efficiently. C-Track can therefore be regarded as the operator’s eyes and ears in his vehicles when they are away on the roads doing their business which is earning the owner money,” comments Bruce Richards, Marketing Director of Digicore Fleet Management.
