How often have you been irritated by a security guard? You enter an office park and are bombarded with requests for information when all you want to do is get inside and to your appointment on time...
The next high-security complex you enter has a totally different system in place and you sail through...
Which one is using the right method? There is not really an answer to this as there are literally as many 'right' methods as there are buildings. Everybody wants security measures in place, but nobody wants to be hindered by them. Often, though, it is not the methods of security in place that cause the frustration, but the staff on duty. Read Dr Craig Donald's take on this subject ('Developing a good security climate') - it could put you in a position to help build a better reputation in the industry!
Hospitals, except perhaps for the casualty sections, tend to conjure up images of tranquility and recovery. But that is not always the case and hospitals are faced with a need for increased security measures (see http://www.iol.co.zaindex.php?set_id=1&click_id=15&art_id= vn20070803080510298C548489for examples of what I am referring to). Our feature this issue is on security in the healthcare sector, see 'Tagging along to greater efficiency' to see what is available to assist in protecting patients, staff and property at hospitals and clinics.
And just in case you had not noticed, the long-awaited 2007/08 Access Control Handbook has been sent to you with this issue of Hi-Tech Security Solutions. I trust you will enjoy both reads.
Till next month,
Lynne Larsen
