September 2006 News & Events

You all know how vehemently proudly South African I am, and this month we decided to let local manufacturers have their say on the matter too. And what an impressive display of locally manufactured - and some developed, too - products they have. Andrew Seldon spoke to a few of these companies and we have proof that local really is lekker! I have often said that we face unique problems in South Africa and sometimes have to come up with appropriate unique solutions, see the locally manufactured feature in which we showcase some of what is available from, to and in the local security industry.

And government has made known its latest approach to the crime situation in our country as well. According to a notice on the website on 1 August, the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cabinet cluster has decided to follow a two-pronged strategy in the fight against crime in South Africa. The strategy was submitted to and endorsed by Cabinet at its Lekgotla in the last week in July. The strategy, while confirming the central role of law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime picks up, also, on the principle of community involvement and the establishment of partnerships as key instruments in crime prevention and combating. The concept was first raised in 1992 at a conference of the African National Congress, where policy was being shaped on how to police a democratic South Africa.

The JCPS briefed Cabinet on the various crime-types that affect South Africa, especially those that threaten or take the lives of people. (see http://www.info.gov.za/speeches/2006/06080210451002.htm for the full report)

A country of opportunity if ever there was one...

Till next month,

Lynne
