The public are becoming increasingly confused and at times misled by the increasing numbers of suppliers of legal services who are not registered attorneys. Cases of fraud concerning the Road Accidents Fund have recently been highlighted and a number of victims have been defrauded by unregulated legal practices.
With this in mind the Cape Law Society has issued official identity documents to registered attorneys. The public now has the right to ask for formal identification cards of any practitioner approaching them to offer legal services. The Cape Law Society has also introduced the ID card system to empower the public to protect themselves so that they may discern the difference between the services offered by debt collectors, legal advisors and others who would present themselves as attorneys.
By encouraging the public to utilise the services of attorneys, the Cape Law Society hopes to regulate the industry and investigate all allegations of misconduct against its members.
