Electricity theft is a major problem in South Africa. This is according to Kevin Norwitz, Managing Director of Aluvin Securiseal, a local manufacturer and distributor of security seals.
"There are still many companies and organisations that are afraid to talk about electricity theft. For some reason they prefer to sweep this important issue under the carpet. I believe that this must be brought into the open as we have to protect the good, paying customers who end up footing the bill."
Although Aluvin has a range of world-class seals and both manufactures and imports under licence from E.J. Brooks Company, a world leader in the utility security field, Norwitz explained that a quality seal is the basic entry-level requirement.
"The success of the system is not only in the quality of the seal, but in the efficacy of the entire security system designed for the particular purpose. The basis for the integrity of our systems is that each seal is individually and uniquely numbered making possible the immediate discovery of any tampering.
Although these products and systems have been a success worldwide, Norwitz warns that it takes two parties to make things work properly. "While we have perfected keeping the integrity of the system in tact and we can - and do - train our clients on how best to safeguard the system, constant vigilance is required."
"For example, customised security sealing procedures for the electricity industry should be implemented and adhered to. This includes procedures for procurement, safeguarding, correct application and disposal as well as auditing techniques," explained Norwitz.
Mahen Chandulal, from the Howick Local Authority which uses Aluvin seals to curb theft, explains that it is difficult to estimate the quantum of electricity theft that takes place.
"We are a small authority and there is no doubt that we lose a substantial amount of money each year through electricity theft. But we are hoping that with the use of Aluvin's seals there will be discernable improvement," concludes Chandulal.
