A recent announcement by a local radio station reported smoke was seen coming from the Monte Casino entertainment complex in Fourways. A diesel generator had started and smoke from the exhaust had entered parts of the building.
Smoke detectors activated and the control room staff were alerted and able to implement reaction procedures to prevent a potentially dangerous situation which could have not only affected the smooth operation of the casino but could have been a threatening situation for the casino's clients.
SABS representative
FDIA Chairman, Keith Norgate, is to sit on a special SABS technical sub committee to investigate the introduction of a preface to the newly released ISO 14520 gas-extinguishing standard.
A special SABS meeting was called to evaluate the future use of NAFIII extinguishing gas. A gas consisting of HCFCs has been banned for use in Europe for many years and the South African industry majority vote calls for a use restriction being placed on this product as well as any other HCFC gas extinguishing substance.
Branch promotion
Brett Birch has been nominated as branch co-ordinator to encourage more activity of the FDIA in Cape Town and Durban. A committee will be established in Durban during August and Birch will funnel information and activity from Johannesburg to the two branches.
Bi-monthly meetings will be coordinated by Birch.
