Westec Electronics and SAN People are working together on a national time and attendance project utilising the Impro Linkscan system. The intention is to use a client's existing inter-office Ethernet network to extend the bi-directional RS485 data link between the Linkscan host bus in their Roodepoort office block, and the field station controllers in the Auckland Park office.
Two RS485 Etherpads are installed, one in each location, and are set up to communicate 'back-to-back' across the Ethernet LAN system, so that they operate as a transparent link between the two office facilities, effectively extending the RS485 bus. The benefits of installing such a system include a reduced installation cost, and centralised configuration and maintenance software. In this instance, it is impractical to install a RS485 cable between the two buildings.
The cost of an additional PC to run the Linkscan software is often taken into consideration, and occasionally an existing PC is used. In this application, the Etherpad offers a more secure solution. The most appealing benefit to the client is that all the configuration and maintenance of the system running two buildings can be done from one PC in its office.
