Datavision's success in Mozambique

April 2012 Surveillance

Datavision Global has established itself on the African continent. With its head office situated in Johannesburg, South Africa, it has recently expanded into various countries in southern Africa, the most recent being Mozambique.

Datavision offers a range of products and services comprising integrated CCTV and security maintenance, data links and networking, fibre optic solutions and access control – including customised biometric solutions. The company has specialised in secure access control and surveillance installations nationally and internationally over the last 20 years.

After a lengthy tender process, Datavision was appointed as the national supplier for electronic security systems for Petroleous de Mozambique (Petromoc), with the initial site being that of the main refinery in Matola, Maputo. An innovative solution had to be provided, taking into account both the internal and external environment Mozambique finds itself in today.

As accredited business partners of NiceVision for the African region, Datavision, along with NiceVision designed, developed and implemented the solution for Petromoc. The technology covers storage tankers, fuel pipelines, fuel tanker areas, administration offices and the entire perimeter of the refinery. These areas are all covered with megapixel fixed IP and PTZ cameras, full audio functionality and infrared dual beams on the perimeter for intrusion detection and effective response to incidents.

The monitoring centre is the infrastructural hub for the remaining sites that will be integrated into the system in the near future. It comprises of a video wall and operator workstations designed and manufactured by Datavision and managed with NiceVision management software and associated hardware.

The control centre management hub integrates 17 Soyal biometric vein readers for time and attendance, 190 megapixel fixed IP cameras, 21 Infrared PTZ cameras, three thermal PTZs, seven thermal fixed cameras and 100 sets of infrared dual beams for perimeter protection with integrated audio and physical barrier access, ie, boom gates and turnstiles.

The project had installation challenges, in particular the language barrier, the tumultuous weather as well as the introduction of the latest technology required intensive training and development programmes in order to ensure the sustainability and continuity of the system. Datavision is committed to development of local skills and as such employed local labour to train in the equipment deployment and control centre management.

Revised access control and security policies and procedures were also documented for Petromoc. Environmentally adapted in-house training was provided to the local employees in order for the client to leverage on the enhanced functionality and realise their maximum return on investment.

The project has been a great success, not only for Datavision, but also for Petroleous de Mozambique.
