Handheld metal detectors are widely used today to frisk airline passengers, shoppers and those attending court proceedings. They are also being increasingly used by correctional services authorities to ensure that prisoners are not in possession of dangerous items like razor blades.
Aware of its particular problems in Northern Ireland, the British Army commissioned the design of an effective screening device by the UK company Guartel, who also specialise in the manufacture of state-of-the-art mine detectors.
The Guartel HD 6, which is NATO codified, has been accepted into service by the British Army and police forces and similar organisations worldwide. It was recently used for checking those attending the recent high-profile Lockerbie trial in The Netherlands.
The Guartel HD 6, which is impact resistant, waterproof, shockproof and EMC-shielded is now available in South Africa. It is suitable for use by security personnel at airports, conferences, exhibitions and any other situation that requires totally effective screening. The detector is powered with a standard 9 V battery, available from any store, eliminating the memory effects associated with the use of many types of rechargeable batteries.
In addition, the HD 6 is about to be complemented by a new high-sensitivity covert metal detector that can be used in situations (including VIP events) where the presence of security needs to be seen as low-key.
