Video surveillance cuts theft at this textiles manufacturer.
Falke Textiles, located in Bellville, Cape Town, recently implemented a full IP video surveillance system for the security of its factory. Falke has established itself as a leading textile manufacturer, specifically in the area of socks, although they have many other clothing products available. The installation and configuration was done by Andre Snyman and Philip Conradie of 5th Dimension Trading.
The factory as a whole was experiencing a high amount of loss due to theft and a surveillance system was decided on as the best solution to firstly address the theft issue, and secondly to provide a powerful management tool for monitoring of staff and products. This surveillance system empowered the product line managers with the ability to manage their departments much more efficiently by being able to monitor all of the IP cameras within their specific departments.
An analogue solution was considered at first but the decision eventually fell to a full IP-based system due to the sheer size of the installation required, the technology that was available, and of course, video quality which is much higher than standard CCTV devices. For the installation, the entire factory, both inside and outside, was covered with IP surveillance cameras.
The camera of choice for this project was primarily Vivotek’s IP7330 bullet camera. This outdoor, weatherproof IP camera provided Falke and 5th Dimension with great cost-effectiveness and high performance as it has a built-in infrared LED lamp for evening or dark situations. Other cameras that were used included Vivotek’s IP7142 (outdoor, high video quality bullet camera), IP7161 (2 megapixel day/night camera), and IP7130 (high video quality indoor camera). A few super long range infrared LED lamps were also used in certain environments to provide for long distance (50 m) night viewing functionality.
All of the cameras are powered from two Edimax 16 Port Power over Ethernet Switches, and all recording and monitoring is done via a PC server running Vivotek’s free video surveillance software, with remote logins for all managers and security personnel needing to view the cameras. A wireless link was also installed with Ubiquiti Nanostations for a connection to a security room at the main gate so that any security personnel can also monitor the cameras remotely.
This large-scale security solution has equipped Falke textiles with the ability to have total management involvement in both staff, products and safety, and has drastically improved productivity and decreased theft within the company.
