Security and fire projects provide MTN with large FM200 system

March/April 2001 Fire & Safety

Security & Fire Projects was recently handed the task of supplying MTN Germiston with the FM200 Fire Suppression System.

The FM200 System has been designed to comply with the NFPA 2001 standards with the cylinders being centrally located and pipe work distributing throughout the switching centre delivery in excess of two tons of FM200 suppression.

MTN selected the product FM200 as the only product that meets all their protection requirements. The project presented interesting design concepts as traditionally FM200 would be located within the risk area because of the low pressure nature and minimal floor space requirements, in this instance MTN opted for a centrally located cylinder bank resulting in co-ordinated engineering of the various pipe routes to provide protection to the 14 areas.

The total project value including access control, CCTV and point monitoring amounted to R2,5 million representing 20% of the total building cost. The real benefits of using FM200 is the space saving of cylinders whilst providing rapid fire suppression typically within 10 s of discharge, the added benefit being low design concentration with no clean up after discharge and completely safe for use in occupied areas.

The product FM200 is well supported locally by Security and Fire Projects carrying sufficient replenishment stock in the event of discharges and have first fill and refill facilities providing rapid response. This support is further extended to provide the client with gas integrity testing utilising the Retrotec Integrity Tester which is a requirement for fire suppression systems regardless of type of extinguishent. The Integrity tester creates a positive pressure within an enclosure and measures the return air in order to calculate the leakage factor and hold time, the standard hold time at the design concentration is 10 min, the software develops a report showing the achieved concentration and hold time.

The FM200 fire suppression system is controlled by a Ziton analog addressable multisense fire detection system including high sensitivity smoke detection (HSSD) to provide a three state fire confirmation prior to coincidence being achieved and ensuring no false discharges. Each protected area is fitted with a gas control unit which allows operators to set the system from automatic to manual when entering an area and vice versa when leaving, the gas control units include a manual override in the event of the system being locked off.
