AFS Systems, in association with Phosa Iliso, have been awarded a contract to design, supply and install an analog addressable fire detection system to the Carlton Centre complex in Johannesburg.
The Centre is owned and partially tenanted by Transnet and its associated companies. The building is in the process of being renovated and upgraded to enable Transnet to locate all its operating division within the Centre.
The fire detection system is supplied by Ziton South Africa and is fully analog addressable. A total of 47 two-loop control panels will be interconnected to the Meastro graphical user interface which provides comprehensive floor plan layouts indicating the status of every fire detection device connected to the system and thus enabling rapid response to any fire, fault or maintenance condition detected. In addition, statistical reports and audit trails of the entire operation are provided.
In excess of 4500 detection devices will be installed throughout the offices and corridors of each floor, providing comprehensive coverage. Manual call points and audible alarms will be provided at all fire escape exits. Over 50 000 m of cabling will be required to complete the entire system.
Other services incorporated in the tender award are the provision of an emergency fire telephone system and the integration of the fire detection system with the access control and security management installation. The project, which is being managed by Ray Garnett, commenced in December 2000 and is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2001.
