An affiliation agreement has been struck with the Fire Protection Association of South Africa for use of the secretarial functions and facilities as well as a foundation for future training being laid for fire.
End-users and consultants are being urged to support the FDIA and use their members for all future projects and services providing the purchasers and specifiers with the facility of third party consultation in case of technical complaints, and the comfort of knowing the contractor has been trained in his discipline. With the support of the consultants, end-users and insurance industry in utilising FDIA members it will encourage unlisted companies to attend training courses to qualify for membership to the association and ultimately raise the overall performance and quality standards in the Fire detection industry.
Fire standards
In the past specifiers, contractors and end- users were confused as to which standards are applicable for South Africa and what standards they should specify for fire detection and gaseous extinguishing systems, should it be: SABS, ISO, FM, UL, LPC, Vds, BS, EN. Does one choose American standards, British standards or European standards?
The SABS has made it clear it wishes to follow British standards as for as possible and it is to this end that the FDIA has pursued the standards issue and have agreement that the following standards will be presented for adoption.
The following two standards are to be implemented shortly:
* BS 5839: Standard for design and installation of fire detection systems.
* ISO 14520: Standard for design and installation of clean agent gas extinguishing systems.
Further standards that are in the pipeline are:
* BS 5306: Standard for design and installation of CO2 gas extinguishing systems.
* BS 6266: Standard for fire detection in electronic data processing areas.
The above four standards are all the consultant has to specify for future requirements for fire detection or gaseous extinguishing systems.
