Surveillance and off-site monitoring

December 2007 Surveillance

Effective surveillance and off-site monitoring is a very satisfying way of 'interacting' with 'wanna-be crooks'. Picture the scene: a rural area covered in scrubby undergrowth and there, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but a palisade fence is a cellphone repeater tower. From experience, the little fellow that is approaching the palisade fence knows this is a cake walk, peel open the fence with a bit of help from your mates and go in and get the copper. But he is not yet 10 metres from the perimeter fence and if he was blessed with a sixth sense, his neck would start to prickle, someone or something is watching him. A sensor picks up his movement and relays his image to the offsite video monitoring control room thousands of miles away and suddenly the scene does not seem quite as tranquil. A voice from nowhere warns the would-be felon off and he scurries away.

This, says Frank Fowles of Security Systems and Equipment Suppliers (SS&ES), is the proactive way of securing your site. "It os always first prize to prevent crime rather than having to react to it," says Fowles.

"We have provided a number of off-site video alarm monitoring companies locally and in Africa with the CAMS package for their control rooms," says Fowles. (CAMS stands for central automated monitoring and management system).

CAMS is a modular package for off-site monitoring. CM CAMS Monitoring automatically displays the event video and audio from remote sites. CM CAMS Manager manages the network and distributes video to other control rooms.

CC CAMS Checker reports on the status of all DVRs and cameras and

CS CAMS Storage is a customised storage backup for the control room.
