Multiplexers, VCRs and monitors from Vicon Industries are playing a crucial role in a major CCTV installation at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. The project is widely regarded as the biggest integrated hospital security initiative in Europe.
The Royal Victoria is the oldest hospital in Northern Ireland and it was imperative that the security equipment should be unobtrusive and in keeping with the aesthetics of this 26-building Victorian structure.
Vicon's Aurora digital multiplexers can record up to 16 cameras on one VCR and feature front panel telemetry control. The units offer intelligent updating of live video and recording together with linear electronic zoom from 1x to 12x. Analog sequential switching is also a feature and this is complemented by internal video motion detection. Video can be sequenced in individual sectors in multiscreen modes.
The Vicon equipment has been installed by Chubb (Northern Ireland) who used an Andover Controls software package which allows expansion to guard tours, asset tagging, baby tagging, building management, multiple workstations and control point workstations.
Nurse attack system
Other crucial aspects of the project include 156 colour digital cameras, 230 proximity card readers, 42 intruder alarms and a system to guard against nurse attacks. This technology is triggered by a toggle worn on the belts of nurses. The toggle throws an infrared light onto sensors in the ceiling and the location of the incident is automatically pinpointed, allowing the area to be sealed.
