Republiek Voedsel opts for digital surveillance and management system

February 2001 Surveillance

Republic Voedsel, a holding company of the popular Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) franchise, recently installed new digital CCTV surveillance systems in its outlets. The installation was carried out by Rothtech International, using equipment supplied by Sanyo SA.

Gideon Malan from Republiek Voedsel explained that the company required a system that could be used both as a security and management tool. From a security perspective, the objectives are to ensure that the 'problem areas' viz front counter, exit doors and drive-through areas are properly secured. The system is also aimed at enhancing the general security of the outlets for both staff and the public, using the latest technology available.

As a management tool the objective of the new system is to determine whether staff arrive on time for work and assist in stock control, thereby enabling an improvement in food cost. In addition, the system will be used to determine whether staff have received sufficient training as well as to determine a staff member's general service to customers.

Traditionally, a normal CCTV system with cameras and a VCR recorder would have been sufficient. However, certain shortfalls were highlighted by Malan regarding using the more traditional system ie the tapes need to be changed on a regular basis and due to the 'I am only human' factor this proved not to be a reliable method.

Malan wanted a system that could allow his Area Managers to control the assigned stores in a more productive and cost-effective way, and as a result opted to go digital.

Malan's main reasons in selecting the digital system were:

* Remote view - an Area Manager can log-in to site at any time.

* Record specific incidents - while logged in a recording can be made of a specific incident.

* Print specific incidents - while logged in a snapshot of a specific incident can be printed.

* Set for specific times - Various cameras can be set for recording different times.

* Playback of recordings - recordings on remote PC can be utilised from manager's laptop at any location.
