Johnson Controls' DVR 5000

April 2007 Surveillance

Digital video recorders (DVRs) are experiencing speedy uptake in the security market due to their greater storage capacity and faster search and retrieval functionality. Johnson Controls' digital vision network (DVN) 5000 Series, which is specially designed for low bandwidth conditions, takes these advances a step further with its advanced motion detection features and ability to integrate with the company's popular CardKey access control solution.

Says Neil Cameron of Johnson Controls South Africa: "It is the DVN's motion detection system, however, that is changing the concept of video surveillance. The DVN 5000's motion tracking and object behaviour algorithm enables security staff to specify what represents suspicious behaviour, and handle only images where such behaviour occurs.

Advanced image analysis software can also be activated to search video for user-defined objects.

Security staff also no longer need to be confined to a control room with a bank of monitors. Johnson Controls' conditional refresh wavelet-based transmission algorithm, DeltaWavelet, makes high quality video over low bandwidth a reality and staff can move around with a PDA, monitoring situations as they develop. In addition, images can be stored on local HDDs, RAID 5, external RAID arrays and SANs, allowing customers to maximise their existing investment.

The DVR 5000 offers a 4-, 8- or 16-channel recording and management system, enabling remote management of complex digital video architectures (LAN, WAN or Internet) through intuitive interfaces and powerful tools. A critical benefit is that each channel can use a variety of individual algorithms and formats, and not be tied into only one format for the whole DRV.

A built-in Web server, VisionWeb, enables viewing of live or recorded images (with audio) as well as control of pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ) cameras over any TCP/IP connection within Internet Explorer Web browser - no special software is required. Intelligent bandwidth/picture content sensing and variable transmission quality make smooth streaming of video and audio a reality even over low bandwidth communication lines.

DVN software runs on an ordinary PC workstation and RemoteControl enables complete remote configuration and management of any server.
