Business Against Crime South Africa has welcomed the release of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Annual Report, incorporating crime trends and statistics for the period 1 April 2005 to 31 March 2006.
"The newly released crime statistics indicate that steady progress is being made in the national fight against crime across a broad front," says Siphiwe Nzimande, CEO of Business Against Crime.
These positive tendencies are however countered by the negative trends in specific crime categories, such as serious and violent crime instigated by organised syndicates.
Nonetheless, Business Against Crime and the business sector have welcomed the decision by president Thabo Mbeki to re-energise the partnership between business and government regarding the national crime challenges.
It should also make a meaningful impact on these crimes in the coming months, particularly since Government had prioritised aggravated robberies recently for special focused action.
Information gleaned from the business sector confirms the ongoing high levels of serious and violent crime, such as robberies undertaken by well-armed highly organised groups on the cash-in-transit, gaming and retail sectors.
Both the number of aggravated robberies and the financial losses incurred remain a serious cause of concern. However, owing to proactive and decisive action taken by both business and government, the number of fatalities and injuries in these robberies is being minimised.
