Rapiscan Africa has announced the successful completion of its Safe Skies for Africa contract. A US presidential initiative, Safe Skies for Africa aims at improving aviation safety across the African continent.
The initiative, started in 1998, is funded by United States Departments of State and Transportation. It aims to increase the number of sub Saharan Africa countries that meet the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, improve safety at airports in the area, and improve regional air navigation services in Africa by deploying modern technologies.
Nine countries were selected for the programme including Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Mali, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. Additional US government agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Immigration and Naturalisation Service (INS), US Customs Service, Department of Defense and US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) also support the initiative.
According to Rapiscan Africa, technical manager, Ben Lavin, who has been working on Safe Skies for Africa project for two years, the company supplied equipment and expertise to airports in Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Kenya, Mali, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda.
