Entry-level access control

November 2005 Access Control & Identity Management

Throughout our daily lives we have to gain access to various places/areas. With the security problems that prevail, many of these access points have been locked and can only be released by using a key, operating an electric lock, or motor drive in the case of larger external doors/gates.

The simple lock and key aside, what are the common keyless devices that one can use for access control?

Keypad

The keypad is simple to install and very convenient to use. Key in the predetermined code and the keypad will activate the electric door lock or operate the access point motor controller. Ideal for access around the office or at the home as there is no need to carry keys, tags or remotes.

But how secure is the code? The problem is not about being able to crack the code but that of unwittingly giving the code to unauthorised people.

Tag/card reader

The commonly used entry-level readers today use proximity or contactless RFID technology. No more complicated to mount than a keypad the proximity reader offers very similar functionality but a higher level of security. The access point can only be used with a valid tag or card unlike as mentioned earlier a keypad which only requires an access code which can be more easily compromised.

Remote controls

Another common method of access control involves using wireless technology. Remote controls offer the most convenient way of operating an external access point such as a garage door, perimeter gate or traffic barrier. From the security and comfort of one's vehicle and without having to be directly at the point of access, it is simply a matter of pressing a remote control button.

Installation is made easy by the fact that the receiver that is going to activate the particular device can be mounted directly at the motor.

It also offers the same level of security when compared to the proximity system contemplated earlier, as the user has to be in possession of a valid transmitter before access will be allowed.
