An extension to the CCTV security system at Cavendish Square shopping centre in Cape Town has been completed by electronic CCTV surveillance and digital recording systems manufacturer, Thales Advanced Engineering.
The 160-camera Thales surveillance system at the centre has been augmented by the installation of more than 100 panic alarm systems for shop owners within the centre. Thales managing director, Dr Bennie Coetzer, says the panic alarms are either activated by a radio link or by a wall button.
"Panic alarm signals are received directly by the central Argus integrated surveillance system in the centre's security control room where security personnel are immediately alerted. The Argus system automatically concentrates and directs surveillance cameras to focus on the panic alarm area. Foot guards move to the area where they either react to an incident or observe. Such system integration results in sound, proactive security and incident management. It also provides individual tenants with greater peace of mind."
The panic alarm extension of the security system was completed without hitches and was commissioned three days before the scheduled completion date.
"Technology provides the capability to put in place all-encompassing systems that will either prevent crime or if a crime does take place, lead to successful apprehension and prosecution. Proper planning, implementation, ongoing management and maintenance of the system and its human elements - as we have seen at Cavendish Square - are essential to achieve the best results," concludes Dr Coetzer.
