More than 400 learners have earned their place in the skills development sun, having successfully completed an 18-month adult basic education and training (ABET) programme funded by the Policing, Private Security, Legal Services, Justice and Corrections Sector Education and Training Authority (Poslec SETA).
Graduations take place countrywide from today (11 April) to 15 April to award ABET level 4 certificates to 435 learners from the justice, corrections and private security industries. The ceremonies will be attended by the new Poslec CEO Vuyelwa Penxa.
Poslec's ABET programme was launched late in 2003, with R1,8 million in discretionary grants, after workplace skills plans submitted by sector employers revealed a pressing need for literacy and numeracy skills for their own sake and as a gateway to further training and development. A total of 800 previously disadvantaged employees were enrolled.
Says the SETA's programmes manager Solly Ngoasheng: "The individual transformations that have come to our attention reflect the project's tremendous success. Many learners have spoken about a new quality of life resulting from their ability to do things as commonplace to others as signing a letter, reading a book and withdrawing money from the bank without help.
"The learners can now progress to other skills development initiatives, including learnerships and bridging courses to diploma or certificate programmes. Lifelong learning, which is a prime objective of the government's National Skills Development Strategy, is now a reality for these graduates."
