Until now, systems for automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) have been complex combinations of cameras, illuminators and processors. This can often lead to difficulties in housing, mounting, connecting and powering all the different elements.
PIPS Technology has announced the launch of a fully integrated ANPR unit, combining ANPR camera, overview camera, IR illuminator and ANPR processor all in one compact, rugged, waterproof housing. The unit is IP addressable, and will output number plate data over an Ethernet connection. The unit has been named 'Spike'.
Options include data transmission by GPRS, radio LAN, and local storage of data in flash memory. This can allow significant savings in installation and communications costs in many applications.
Local databases can be stored, and a realtime comparison with the ANPR read, so for example a barrier can be controlled by a list of permitted vehicles. The unit is operated from a 12 V supply, and has ultra-low power consumption. This allows operation of temporary sites from batteries if necessary, and allows deployment in areas and applications not previously thought possible.
Applications for this unit include security and police applications, parking and access control systems, journey time monitoring systems, congestion charging and tolling systems, and many others.
