Iridium Satellite service provider, Globalcom has announced the introduction of a new post-paid SIM card from which pre-paid calls can also be made. The Iridium Crew Calling service is the ideal solution for any captain-crew scenario where one satellite phone is available for both business and personal use among several individuals.
With an Iridium Crew Calling post-paid SIM card, the phone's owner or primary user can make post-paid calls from their phone, but still allow other callers to make calls from the phone on their own account, using pre-paid scratch cards.
Crew Calling eliminates the administrative red tape associated with tracking calls made by colleagues or friends and, or separating business calls from those of a personal nature. Also, when the airtime on a scratch card has been depleted it may simply be thrown away and another one purchased, much like traditional phone cards for public phones.
According to Globalcom, the largest uptake of this new service, to date, has originated from Africa's shipping, mining, oil and public calling industries, an indication of how well suited the product is to teams and businesses operating in remote African locations, where terrestrial and cellular telecoms infrastructures either do not exist or are unreliable.
