Schlumberger has published a comprehensive White Paper explaining how smartcards can enhance computer and network security in Windows 2000 systems. IT managers implementing Windows 2000 will find the 28-page document's description of secure transactions, Windows 2000 security and the contribution of smartcards very informative. Augmenting security with smartcard tokens is integral to Windows 2000 log-in procedures and exploited by key applications such as Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.
Readers are introduced to the key features of a secure transaction - authentication, privacy, authorisation, information integrity and nonrepudiation - and the workings of PKI (public key infrastructure) security mechanisms. Building on this base, the Paper then considers some well established implementation approaches, particularly the security capabilities inherent in Microsoft Windows 2000.
Finally, by considering different application opportunities, the Paper analyses the benefits available to the corporate IT manager and to end-users of corporate network services of smartcard tokens as a strong base for secure computer and network operations.
