The Vehicle Security Association of South Africa (VESA) has announced new improved standards for South Africa's favourite vehicle protection device.
South African motor vehicle owners have relied on VESA approved gear shift locks (gearlocks) since 1994 when the first standards were introduced. Popular because they are cost-effective, uncomplicated, they are a visual deterrent and have a five-year warranty.
"It is important for South Africa that we stay on top of vehicle crime," says VESA Managing Director, Conroy Oosthuyzen, "South Africa is the world leader in violent crime such as murder, rape and robbery, but not in motor vehicle theft. We believe that the effectiveness of South African anti-theft products has a lot to do with this statistic.
"The latest techniques used to steal motor vehicles are continuously monitored by VESA. Products, installation techniques and operational standards are then adapted accordingly," says Oosthuyzen, "It is for this reason that we have revised the VESA Standard for Gearlocks considerably.
"Motor owners are often offered insurance incentives to fit gearlocks or other devices. It is important to provide consumers with enough information to understand the products that are available and how to make sure they get the right thing."
The new VESA Standard for Gearlocks comprises two additional levels of protection (the current standard remains unchanged for certain vehicle models). The current standard will be known as Class C and, as such, all the gear shift locks (top locks and pin locks) sold to date will henceforth be referred to as Class C gearlocks.
Class A gearlocks - intelligent auto-arming devices
Class A gearlocks are electrically operated and will engage and disengage automatically with no effort from the driver. Once the ignition is switched off, the intelligent system will automatically lock the transmission - every time! Due to the specific design of certain vehicles, a gear linkage kit must be fitted.
Class B gearlocks - enhanced protection for popular front wheel drive vehicles and 1 t bakkies
This includes the fitment of a gear linkage protection kit to prevent tampering as well as better keys and lock barrels to prevent commercial duplication of keys. Owners and manufacturers of these vehicles will be happy to know that much care has been taken to maintain 100% serviceability whilst reducing the possibility of tampering dramatically.
Class C gearlocks
During a survey conducted by VESA at major shopping centres, it was found that 89% of vehicles fitted with gearlocks were locked. "Motorists realise that a stolen vehicle results in troubles and inconvenience," says Oosthuyzen. "The report at the police station, the excess to be paid and above all the sad sense of loss justifies being diligent in locking your gearlock.
"Around two-thirds of vehicles on South African roads are not insured, simply because the owners cannot afford it. A good vehicle anti-theft device is essential for these people," he concludes.
