The Bandit Intertrac stolen vehicle recovery system, which has resulted in the recovery of more than R10 million worth of stolen vehicles since its launch less than two years ago, is one of only four companies to be awarded Full Approval by VESA, the Vehicle Security Association of South Africa.
Approval requires a consistent 80% plus performance as well as specialised equipment, experience and infrastructure to protect the interests of vehicle owners. Bandit has invested more than R2,5 million in its hi-tech control room and, for maximum efficiency and control, operates its own air and ground recovery teams.
Track and recovery companies face a tough challenge from the more than 500 known vehicle syndicates which capitalise on the relative safety of areas not yet covered by communication networks. By driving a vehicle into a 'dead' area, they are more likely to avoid detection.
To counter this strategy, Intertrac accesses an additional track and recovery technology developed initially by Armscor for military purposes and adapted for commercial use in association with Denel, Armscor's successor.
Another unique aspect of the system is the remote immobilisation feature. "Directly after a theft or hijacking is reported, our control room switches off the vehicle's ignition which brings it to a halt within a 90 s safety period," explained Allon Raiz, the company's Marketing Director. "As a result, we recover an average of 75% of hijacked vehicles within less than two hours."
To minimise the possibility of static theft, which accounts for around five out of seven vehicle losses, the system includes an immobiliser based on VESA level 4 standards. To prevent the possibility of collusion between fitment centre staff and the syndicates, Bandit insists that all internal staff and external fitment centre employees are polygraph tested regularly.
