Bruce Craig, MD of Adaxco, a company that specialises in advanced access control and digital CCTV systems, has applauded the introduction of an IP camera from LevelOne saying its ability to operate in a networked environment provides a heightened level of deterrence.
"Traditional CCTV cameras require an analog-based infrastructure while digital cameras cannot function without costly recording equipment. An IP camera, however, uses only the desktop PC to function." A number of the units are currently undergoing testing at a large retail chain's distribution facility in Gauteng and Craig says the pilot site is successfully operating according to specifications.
LevelOne, a manufacturer of network switches, wireless LANs, routers and network interface cards, recently released the IP Network Camera with its primary feature being the ability to operate live across the Internet or in LAN/WAN environments.
Features include enhanced MPEG-4 video compression for faster network transferring, motion detection alert, event-triggered e-mail notification and a friendly Web-based management interface.
Jason Niedermeyer who imports LevelOne equipment to SA, says the wireless IP Network Camera supports 10/100 Mbps Ethernet. "It is ideal for security surveillance ranging from home use to sophisticated banking hall security. Other applications could include day care centres, hospitals, shopping malls, parking lots, tourist attractions, promotions or any environment where live monitoring across the Internet or network is required."
The LevelOne IP network camera can be set on motion detector mode where it will 'fire off' about 10 pictures to a PC when it detects movement. This application is especially suited to unpopulated environments.
