More technical skills are required within telecommunications, particularly competitive, growing areas such as satellite infrastructure development and application.
This is the view expressed by Q-KON, an established engineering group and provider of turnkey solutions and managed network services within the African telecommunications market. In order to help the market, Q-KON has extended its training services portfolio and now offers a combination of practical supplementary VSAT training and Hands On Skills Test (HOST) sessions in support of the Global VSAT Forum (GVF) VSAT installation certification training.
The GVF provides a comprehensive training programme for VSAT and broadband satellite terminal installers, which serves as a solid foundation for skills acquisition and development. The programme is aimed at all installers, field technicians and engineers who may be responsible for activating any type of VSAT terminal. It is hosted at Q-KON’s training centre in Centurion, Pretoria, and is delivered via a combination of online, interactive and/or simulator-driven modules.
These modules have been developed by SatProf, an established provider of eLearning material specifically designed for satellite professionals. According to Q-KON the value of the HOST sessions lies in the opportunity to acquire hands-on skills that is required for any professional installation of VSAT terminals. It also emphasises the mitigation of uplink interference.
These sessions represent an integral step in both the Basic and Advanced VSAT Installer certification in the GVF training certification path.
The training curriculum covers Satellite 101 (satellite and VSAT basics); GVF510 (Core Skills for VSAT Installers) and GVF HOST (verification of student’s ability to use the core skills taught during the course).
“The HOST & Practical VSAT training is required for all GVF certifications,” explains Willie van der Merwe, sales engineer, Satellite Networks, Q-KON. “With our experience, expertise and knowledge of VSAT and this evolving industry, we are in a position to assist operators that deal directly with this infrastructure and integration. This programme is an important contribution to efforts to boost telecommunications with core technical skills development and availability.”
