The market is flooded with electric strikes and electromagnetic locks, all of which offer differing levels of access control, but when it comes to access security, electric locks are unbeatable. This is according to Michael Gordon of Lockwise, South African representatives for Abloy.
"The difference between access control and access security is enormous. Electric strikes often come to be out of alignment in time, and the door does not lock closed. It is a common occurrence to find a door that should be latched into an electric strike simply resting against the strike, and as you watch it close behind you, the door latch simply bounces off the strike again. No access control, and certainly no access security," he says.
According to Gordon, electromagnetic locks is an oxymoron. The unit is an electromagnet and not a lock. It is totally dependant on an uninterrupted power supply, and even the briefest loss of power will render an unprotected system accessible.
Gordon believes that electric locks, such as those offered by Abloy, offer unrivalled physical security via a deadlocking latch and/or bolt, superior mechanical resistance to pulling (up to 10 times) and enhanced resistance to physical attack. In addition, the locks are aesthetically pleasing due to the lock being hidden and the door appearance itself being unaffected.
"Electric locks offer complete flexibility in connection to a wide variety of controlling systems, and also allow for monitoring of the lock, door handle and door status. It is possible to control and monitor a large number of doors from one point, using bus technology. Ultimate safety levels can be achieved when the locks are used in fire doors and emergency exits," comments Gordon.
"The Abloy electric locking range is a comprehensive product range for all door types, and all locks offer superior durability and reliability. In addition, the range is compatible with international norms for access control and door security for the disabled," concludes Gordon.
